About this course

You’ll work 1-to-1 with a qualified volunteer who will help you spot habits, fine-tune your awareness, and improve your on-road decision-making. And because you’ll drive
your own car, learning takes place in a comfortable setting.

What does skilful driving mean to you? Maybe it’s feeling calm in busy traffic, planning ahead on unfamiliar roads, or simply using your car more efficiently. Wherever you're starting from, our Advanced Driver course is built to help you progress - at your pace, with guidance that fits your real-world driving

With a full driving licence and your own car, you’re ready to take your skills further and refine how you drive day-to-day. From learning new techniques to confirming what you already do well, you’ll finish with the confidence to enjoy every journey. You don’t need special qualifications or previous experience – just a willingness to learn.

Advanced Driving is for anyone who wants to improve behind the wheel. Just passed your test? This course will help sharpen your technique. Been driving for years? Take your road awareness and knowledge to the next level.

The course is built around the police system of car control – widely recognised as the gold standard in advanced driving. While it’s not about driving like the emergency services, you’ll learn the same principles to stay safe, smooth, and in control. You’ll discover how to plan, stay calm under pressure, and respond confidently to the unexpected – developing the key skills of defensive driving through practice and feedback.

It’s a chance to build habits that last, with guidance that’s practical and personal.

Once you sign up for your course, we’ll send you a welcome pack right away to kickstart your journey with us!

You’ll be paired with one of our fantastic Local Groups and matched with a dedicated volunteer Observer who’s here to support you every step of the way.

Get ready for your observed drives with your friendly Observer! Each drive is a wonderful opportunity to learn something new, from using the IPSGA framework to those all-important POWDERY checks you should do before hitting the road. When you and your Observer feel ready, it’s time to go for your Advanced Test with one of our Examiners.  

Please ensure that your car has a suitable front passenger seat with a working seat belt for your Observer. Safety is key on this journey.

When you buy the course, you will also get free Associate membership with IAM RoadSmart. But this is more than just a membership; it’s a chance to learn, grow, and transform your skills. Once you pass your test, you will join Full member status, standing together with a community dedicated to road safety and saving lives.
