How to become a member
There are three routes into IAM RoadSmart membership:
– Take an Advanced driving or riding course
– Test and membership
– Accredited business training
– By exemption (holding a similar, approved qualification)
Routes into IAM RoadSmart membership
Advanced courses
Develop your skills one-to-one with a qualified expert. They will observe your driving or riding over a series of sessions, and help you pass your Advanced test.
Test and membership
If you already have advanced knowledge from another training provider, or have in-depth understanding of road safety, you can go straight to taking our test.
Business Drivers
If you’re a business driver, your work training may already be accredited by IAM RoadSmart. Ask your employer or click the link below to find out more about our business courses.
Member by exemption
IAM RoadSmart recognises professional drivers and riders from the emergency services, and other institutions such as RoSPA. If you qualify, you simply pay an annual fee to access membership benefits.

Membership is renewed annually, and your first year is covered in the purchase price of an Advanced Course.

How far will
you go?
IAM RoadSmart members get the chance push themselves to three levels of recognition. Each level will improve your on-road skills:
You gain ‘F1RST’ status only on recommendation from your examiner or if you’ve completed advanced, on-road police qualifications. Existing IAM RoadSmart members may also take a Member’s Assessment to try and achieve a F1RST.
Fellow membership offers enhanced recognition to full members who commit to keeping their advanced skills up to date. This commitment is demonstrated by retaking the Advanced test every three years.
Take the ultimate challenge and become a Master Driver or Rider. Open to all full members, our Masters Programme provides one-to-one mentoring to help you gain the highest UK civilian, on-road skills possible.
